On 14-Dec-2019 – Second Step Software Development Limited; All Departments and Functions were appraised at level 3 of the CMMI Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). The appraisal was performed by CMMI Lead Appraiser Mr. Teenu Puri of Arowana Consulting Ltd.

CMMI is a capability improvement framework that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective processes that ultimately improve their performance.

An appraisal at maturity level 3 indicates the organization is performing at a “defined” level. At this level, processes are well characterized and understood, and are described in standards, procedures, tools and methods. The organization’s set of standard processes, which are the basis for the maturity level 3 are established and improved over time.

The two products Healthcare Information System and Student Information System carried out collaboratively by both locations were part of the appraisal along with the other functions like Sr. Management, Quality Assurance, Training, Configuration Management and Procurement.

The definition, implementation and assessment of the CMMI based Quality Management System was carried out in record time of 12 months, leading to a successful appraisal at maturity level 3.

HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM REVAMP TO DEAL WITH COVID-19.

Al Azhar University Hospital under the management of Global Medical Solutions (GMS) was designated by the Egyptian government as a COVID-19 emergency centre.

Second Step, working with the GMS and Thiqqa teams in Egypt, quickly adapted the existing HIS system in Alazhar University Hospital to meet the requirements of COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment stipulated by Egypt Ministry of Health (MOH). Close cooperation between the teams meant it was only a matters of hours from receiving requirements to defining a solution and presenting back to Alazhar team.

The HIS solution covers all requirements applied by WHO protocols and treatment plans from MOH. HIS currently provides a full paperless hospital management system to minimise any infection through handling of physical patient files, x-ray and scan images and all other paper materials. The system is robust enough to operate with minimal direct-support inside the isolation zones, where onsite support isn’t allowed for more than 14 days.

It is credit to the vision of the Second Step team to build an easily configurable world class HIS product that a solution was provided in a short space of time. Emergency use ICD10 codes for COVID-19 diagnoses were configured and deployed, drug administration functions were optimised to support prescribed COVID-19 treatments and reports designed to meet statutory needs of reporting on COVID-19 patients. Finally, quick reference guides were prepared for key end-user tasks to support new staff deployed in the hospital.

As the teams are familiar working with each other remotely across multiple locations they were able to collaborate efficiently and effectively on this solution for Al Azhar.
